Artist Spotlight: James Lee Byars

One area where my tastes diverge from my friends is my love of performance art. People who don't totally immerse themselves in the art world often write off this facet of creative output as pretentious and without real talent. While i can see their point in some instances, as a lot of performance art could be likened to glorified Jackass skits, in some cases i couldn't disagree more. What i love about performance art is its ability to create a fictional reality, one where everything doesn't need to abide by the rules we and the universe have created. James Lee Byars often stretched those limits, doing his absolute best to convince people he was dead on multiple occasions. He usually faked these deaths in large, gold plated rooms, which often complimented his beautiful large scale installations and sculptures. Although he died over 13 years ago, help me keep his fire ablaze by spreading his genius to your friends.
