Spotlight: Jacques Audiard

Jacques Audiard finally gained worldwide attention last year for his academy nominate film A Prophet. I had discovered him a few years earlier, and he has since become one of my favorite directors. The French in general are notorious for their ability to interject far more intelligence in their action films than us yankees, but in my opinion, Mr.Audiard has absolutely mastered that art. His films are often times brutal, but always honest and thoughtful. While A Prophet totally lived up to the hype, heres trailers for his films The Beat My Heart Skipped and Read My Lips, which are both wonderful.

yes, its in french, just trust me.

Private White V.C.

If your in the market for some classics, Private White V.C has got you covered. The company is one of UK's biggest manufactures, but they also produce a small in house line. Made in Manchester, you can count on the quality, but i've also heard the fit is relatively modern as well.

Gimmie Dat

Being materialistic is a horrible trait, especially when you have no fuckin $. Clothes are like woman, you always want what you cant have; and it is absolutely shameful how much of my mind is occupied by these garments when looking into the eyes of an intelligent, beautiful young lady at night.

Moving Images

1. Melancholia Trailer
This is the trailer for the new film by controversial director lars von trier. The only thing better than creepy dramas is when their accompanied by sci-fi elements, which this film seems to have covered. It looks really fantastic, almost to the point that the trailer itself could be considered a short film.

2. Omar Fast - CNN Concentrated
This is a segment of a video by contemporary artist Omar Fast. He manipulates news clips to spell out his poetic and cryptic messages. I've watched this upwards of 20 times in the last couple years.

3. Ryan Trecartin - I-BE AREA
Ryan Trecatin is one of the rising stars of the post y2k art world. His clever takes on modern society, technology specifically, have been celebrated world wide. Here is an episode of his popular reinterpretation of reality tv, proving to be both incredibly funny and creepy simultaneously.

Goodhood Styling

The last few seasons it has become the trendy thing for european retail shops to do a styling shoot with the brands they carry. We've seen it from oki-ni, oipolli, the bureau, the hideout, etc, none of which have ever blown me away. Finally though, one shop nailed it, and un-suprisingly it was the eccentrics over at goodhood. Now if only they bring back their shop snaps.

R.I.P Miroslav Tichy

This is some truly devastating news. Miroslav Tichy was an endlessly talented, some say mentally disturbed czech photographer that only recently started to garner worldwide attention. His toilet roll style homemade cameras and voyeuristic techniques not onlyhelped shape his relatively creepy appeal, but also cost him 7 years of his life in prison as a subversive. The fact that an individual like Miroslav can rise to stardom is the reason i love the arts, and im so glad his hauntingly beautiful images will live on for eternity. Pour some.

Videos Of Interest

Wiley - Numbers in Action
This is one of the better music videos i've seen lately. Its entertaining, creative, and most importantly, fits the vibe of the song perfectly.

Rein Vollenga for Mugler
This is a simple but very effective video. Its amazing how one sculpture and a few effects can create such a moody viewing experience.

Weegee Tells How
This is simply fantastic, one of my all time favorite photographers explains his process.

Styling Pics

Heres some pictures i took for an editorial project for my styling class. The project is more streetwear oriented than i would normally wear, so the outfits are slightly louder than my every day get-ups. For example, the rrl shirt would never normally rub up against the supreme varsity, and those wood wood converse have never felt my feet in the 3 years i've owned them.

Movie Mondays

1. Hi. Mom! Dir: Brian De Palma
This is a surrealist, voyeuristic masterpiece of forward thinking cinema. It was made in 1970, but feels too smart for most viewers in 2011. I didnt breathe through segments of this film. Seriously, see this fucking movie.

2. Never Let me Go Dir: Mark Romanek
This is a beautifully shot, deeply moving film. Out of all the heart wrenchingly sad movies ive seen over the years, this is one of the few i almost wish ide never seen. Which is a fantastic recommendation by the way.

3. Mesrine pt. 1 & 2 Dir: Jean Francois Richet
Both entries into this two part series documenting the life of famous parisian criminal Jacques Mesrine are incredibly entertaining. These are much better than 99% of hollywood action films, and showcase typically fantastic acting by Vincent Cassel.

Songs for your week

Jake and Dinos Chapman: Fucking Hell

This here is my all time favorite piece of art, Fucking Hell by Jake and Dinos Chapman. The chapman brothers came up with the sensationally popularized uk artists know as the yba's, and got their start as assistants to the wildely popular duo Gilbert and George. While almost all their work is fantastic, my favorite piece is Fucking Hell, a super detailed look at a brutial dystopian future where murderous nazi miniatures reign supreme.
To me it's as overwhelming as a piece of art can be.

Digital Content: Hallmark

I saw a hallmark card this weekend with a heart made out various valentines day staples, and couldn't help but repurpose it for my own feelings about the brand.
