The Ebay Inspiration Shop: Class Post

Ebay will be launching a new branch of their empire on November 10th called 'The Ebay Inspiration Shop". This is essentially a constantly updating physical storefront in NY, NY which you can shop from 24/7 via QR codes on your smart phone. Ebay has selected various 'Trendsetters' such as Charlotte Ronson, Scott Steinberg, Liz Lange, etc to personally curate the items, which range from fashion to electronics and everything in between.
I suppose you can call spending your money on things some other people designate to be cool as inspiring, i says it's the exact opposite. I think this is nothing more than a gimmick, and i don't think people are gonna venture out into the freezing New York winter nights to see some digital camera in a window that they could see on a website. The only reason shopping in person is beneficial is to try things on and see how things feel, both of which are lost in this cheese ball operation. I do, unfortunately, often underestimate the cornyness of the average American consumer though, so by me saying this is a gimmick, probably means this is the new hottest thing. Ebay Inspiration Shops, coming to a town near you in the very near future.

Sneaks Movie Weeks: Happy Go Lucky, Miral, The Trip, Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life

Instead of digging up old favorite films of mine, ive decided instead to do quick reviews of some of the movies i see each week.

Happy Go Lucky - Dir: Mike Leigh 2008
I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. It didn't have as devastating an emotional kick as his darker films like 'Vera Drake' and 'Naked', but it still taught an equally important lesson. This film is similar to his other films in that it is essentially an extremely in depth character study, this time concentrating on Poppy, played perfectly by Sally Hawkins. If you constantly say movies had "too much talking", then i don't recommend this or any of Mike's films, but if you enjoy sophisticated movies, this one is particularly charming.

Miral - Dir: Julian Schnabel 2010
Julian Schnabel is a director who i always stick up for due to his roots in the new york art movement, but i never actually was that drawn to his films. I thought 'Basquiat' and 'Diving Bell' were both nicely done films, but neither demanded repeat views in my opinion. With 'Miral', his most poorly reviewed movie yet, i found a lot to hold on to. I loved this dissection of the cycle of violence in the middle east. It had strong characters with a lot of heart, and Julian's obvious passion about the issue came through in the direction. I definitely recommend this film, especially if you have interest in the middle east situation.

The Trip - Dir: Michael Winterbottom 2010
This was another disappointing outing from director Michael Winterbottom. I always get excited about his films, and always feel let down when their done. I remember being so geeked to see '24 Party People' (because i love the music of the 80's manchester scene), and being amazed by how shallow the film seemed. Steve Coogan is entertaining as always, but i found the film to be severly lacking in the essential comedic departments of wit and emotion, and while its a slightly nice, light watch, i cant recommend it (maybe if your hungover).

Serge Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life - Dir: Joann Sfar 2010
I was lucky to see an advance screening of the new biopic on everyones favorite enfant terrible, Serge Gainsbourg. Overall, i enjoyed this film a lot. It was frequently hilarious, and Eric Elmosnino did a fantastic job breathing life into Serge. The first 45 minutes documenting his childhood and young life was particularly enjoyable, while the second half ran into problems as the director tried to shove all his outlandish female relations into far too short a time. Really, this should have been two films (maybe three), as each one of his famous relationships could have been a great film in its own right. Leaving the theatre though, i felt inspired and alive, so i definitely give this one all my thumbs up.

Artist Spotlight: James Lee Byars

One area where my tastes diverge from my friends is my love of performance art. People who don't totally immerse themselves in the art world often write off this facet of creative output as pretentious and without real talent. While i can see their point in some instances, as a lot of performance art could be likened to glorified Jackass skits, in some cases i couldn't disagree more. What i love about performance art is its ability to create a fictional reality, one where everything doesn't need to abide by the rules we and the universe have created. James Lee Byars often stretched those limits, doing his absolute best to convince people he was dead on multiple occasions. He usually faked these deaths in large, gold plated rooms, which often complimented his beautiful large scale installations and sculptures. Although he died over 13 years ago, help me keep his fire ablaze by spreading his genius to your friends.

Top 5: Spring 2012 Menswear Collections

Fashion month recently ended and the focus has been mainly on the womenswear collections. The menswear showings were pretty stellar and these are the five collections that stood out:

Custo Barcelona

Brothers Custo and David Dalmau established Custo Barcelona in the mid 90s. Since then their brand has gained a reputation for being bold, flashy, and very colorful. Their Spring 2012 menswear collection didn’t disappoint. Creative Director Custo Dalmau created garments with 3D prints that when sold will come with 3D glasses. The kaleidoscope-esque collection also featured a lot of mesh tanks, printed pants, and flannel shirts.

Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott is an outlandish fashion designer with a flair for the eccentric. He is known for his eclectic style and his designs create quite a stir on the runway. His Spring 2012 collection was inspired by The Beverly Hillbillies; it had an air of The Clampetts and Daisy Duke. Models were clothed in overalls, bandannas, and chaps. His menswear collection featured plenty of fringe, denim, and western prints.

J.W. Anderson

J.W. Anderson is a British fashion designer whose Spring 2012 collection was his third showing at London Fashion Week. His menswear collection was inspired by chromosomes and the inner workings of human genetics. He used the chemical structure of a double helix as design details. Anderson used paisley and other tribal prints to tie in the molecular theme. His collection was fairly simplistic and had a vibe that was modern with a vintage twist.

Libertine

Libertine was founded in 2000 by creative director Johnson Hartig, who uses his travels as inspiration for his designs. His Spring 2012 collection was a carefree showing, with models smiling, skipping, and carrying drinks down the runway. The collection was mainly black, white, and grey with flashes of glitter. The collection was a mixture of tailored pieces and t-shirts. Hartig included a lot of screen-printing; there were pieces emblazoned with circles, flowers, and stripes.

N.Hoolywood

N. Hoolywood was established in 2000 by head designer Daisuke Obana. Obana’s design aesthetic is rooted in vintage fashion, taking inspiration from the 70s and 80s. The Spring 2012 collection was inspired by iconic directors from the 1950s and beyond: Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese. Images from classic films were referenced in Obana’s designs. The creepy eye from Vertigo printed on shirts, fedoras inspired by Ocean’s Eleven and the classic quiff hairstyle from West Side Story were present and added to the vintage vibe of the collection.

DJEED

This gives a detailed rundown of Matthew Barneys new project, 'Ancient Evening.' There is no doubt the man is staggeringly genius, and this mythology influenced body of work might be my favorite yet. Read the whole thing, and you will be blown away.

Dipped

Sorry for the lack of posts this week. I moved and was without internet for numerous days. Now i'm settled in though, and i'm celebrating that fact with the introduction of a new feature here at Follow Their Voice: Dipped. If there is one thing i've learned from the menswear coolguy blogosphere, it's that people love seeing what other people wear. So every week make sure to check back and see outfits that are meticulously styled from the most limited edition of japanese garms! Maybe if you follow Dipped every week you will eventually learn how to dress exactly like me, which is the undeniable pinnacle of male fashion. yup, enjoy.

My Boo

I don't think i've had the chance to properly address just how much i love bjork. She literally is the only god i acknowledge. Her new album Biophilia is so fantastic it causes me the best kind of pain. Here is track 2 off the new album, which i would gladly cosign as the best song ever made.

More Bape!

Bape is comin' with some fire as of late. Two new flannels, camo and plaid respectively, both out here slaying folks. Pick them up in their online store.
